£7 million Local Economy Boost Returns for Another Cruise Season
For the last 12 years, the award-winning Liverpool cruise terminal has welcomed cruise liners to the city, generating £7 million for the local economy, with that income spreading to The Wirral. This year that amount is expected to nearly double, with a record 86 ships expected at the terminal.
It’s an increasingly popular destination for visitors who are eager to explore the area. Liverpool City Council’s director of culture, Claire McColgan, said: “Liverpool has firmly secured its status as one of the favourite destinations for many of the big cruise liners”, praising the warm welcome given to guests as one of the reasons behind the success.
For local businesses, the extra traffic can represent a valuable source of income. The guests and staff on board make a significant contribution to nearby businesses with their custom.
The terminal itself along with the cruise lines are also big spenders. Employing staff from the local workforce is only part of it. Liverpool City Council’s procurement team regularly ask for applications from suppliers who can provide them with everything from baggage trailers to move passenger luggage around, to artwork for the terminal buildings.
