According to Facebook, 45% of small UK businesses who use Facebook say they have increased sales because of it, and 78% say it has helped attract customers. Now, it’s teamed up with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) to launch the Boost Your Business campaign, helping to address the digital skills deficit in UK small business.

Small businesses lack vital digital skills

The FSB’s 2017 Learning The Ropes: Skills and Training in Small Businesses report revealed that 41% of small businesses lacked basic digital skills. It also found that around a quarter of small business owners lack confidence in this area.

Sole traders and self-employed people were the most likely to say they were not confident, with many too busy to keep up with latest tech developments.

The government says that digital transformation can make every business more productive, with small businesses who have a strong web presence estimated to grow more than twice as quickly on average.

The FSB believe that if this digital skills deficit isn’t resolved, it could further stall productivity growth in the UK. Now it’s collaborating with Facebook to create and deliver a series of in-person training sessions for small businesses across the UK.

FSB Chairman, Policy and Advocacy, Martin McTague said:

“Digital innovation provides enormous potential both for individual businesses and for improving UK productivity.

“That’s why support to improve digital skills among small business owners is so important and why FSB is now collaborating with Facebook to deliver that support.”

Running from May until the end of the year, ‘Boost Your Business with Facebook and FSB’ will provide in-person training to help entrepreneurs and smaller businesses get started in the digital world. This will help them get the most from the internet, and develop their Facebook and Instagram strategies.

Facebook vice president Ciaràn Quilty said:

“Through the Boost Your Business initiative, in collaboration with FSB, we’ll work side by side with small businesses and start-ups to help them grow.

“We’ve created additional programmes to help people with the skills and resources they need to grow their businesses or put their own ideas into action.”
